Nonprofit political play
Interesting to see political campaigning against Multnomah County Commissioners on Church property. (The photo above, with Church sign inset, was taken 5/11/2004.) Oregon Christian Coalition leadership was also spotted today collecting signatures at this location. Wonder why they're not aware of the IRS regualtions which allow them freedom from paying taxes?
"Organizations described in section 501(c)(3) of the Code that are exempt from federal income tax are prohibited from participating or intervening in any political campaign on behalf of, or in opposition to, any candidate for public office. Charities, educational institutions and religious organizations, including churches, are among those that are tax-exempt under this code section. — IRS Notice IR-2004-59
The location is listed on the Oregon Christian Coalition web site for recall petition signature collection, as Grace Foursquare Church 2235 N.E. 82nd (503) 256-3047, and recall petitions are scheduled to be signed there through Friday. (10 AM to 6 PM M-F)
